Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian is a Canadian-American feminist media critic as well as a public speaking. She is the founder of Feminist Frequency, a site that features videos and comments discussing the depictions of females in popular media. Anita Sarkeesian was a Canadian and American feminist media critic. Feminist Frequency, a web-based resource to educate women about their role in the narratives of pop culture was the result of her research. She also serves as the executive director. The challenge of destroying stereotypes regarding women is her primary goals. But, she also highlights issues related to specifically targeted harassment online against women and other minorities that are left out. Sarkeesian also holds a York University master's in social philosophy, political and philosophical thinking. In addition to being an acclaimed public speaker she has made presentations at TEDxWomen conference and the United Nations Broadband Working Group. At a young age she was intrigued with gender issues and feminist thinking. As a student, in 2009 she started her Feminist Frequency website. The ambitious young woman was targeted on the internet for her website that focused on the gender of videogames. But the harassment did not discourage her. The experience only strengthened her in her role as a feminist journalist. Many awards have been presented to her in recognition of all of the contribution she has made. Anita Sarkeesian has been a media critic for several years and was the creator of Feminist Frequency. The educational nonprofit explores women's representations within the popular culture stories.
